Firefighter Cancer Prevention Fireside Chat

EMERGENCY SERVICES SECTOR MANAGEMENT TEAM FIREFIGHTER CANCER PREVENTION FIRESIDE CHAT 

The Firefighter Cancer Prevention Fireside Chat is being facilitated by the Emergency Services Sector Management Team (ES SMT) to focus on and promote healthy habits in the fire/rescue services, including cancer risk reduction practices.   

Presenting at the fireside chat will be Russel Osgood, Vice President of Education at the Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN) and current Fire Chief of the Ogunquit, Maine Fire Department. Chief Osgood has been in the forefront of the fire service cancer epidemic since 2011 and was a key developer of the FCSN cancer prevention education program, Taking Action Against Cancer in the Fire Service, delivered across the nation. Chief Osgood is a member of the DetecTogether Fire Service Advisory Board and serves on the Fire Fighter Cancer Cohort Study oversight board and works with several study panels focused on reducing the risk for cancer among firefighters. Chief Osgood presents to thousands of firefighters through large conferences to small firehouse talks each year.   

In addition, special guest Chief Edward “Loy” Senter Jr. of Chesterfield County, Virginia. Prior to joining Chesterfield County in 2008, Chief Senter served for nearly 27 years for the Norfolk, Virginia Fire-Rescue Department, including 6 years as the Fire and EMS Chief. Chief Senter currently possesses over 45 years’ experience in the fire/rescue and EMS fields, starting at age 15 when he became a cadet in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Chief Senter is the current President of the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Associations and is a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Chief Senter’s educational background includes an Associate of Applied Science degree in fire science from Tidewater Community College, a Bachelor of Science degree in fire administration from Hampton University, and a Master of Public Administration degree from Old Dominion University. He is a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program, where he received the United States Fire Administration’s Outstanding Research Award for three consecutive years. He is a recipient of the VFCA’s Glenn Gaines Leadership Legacy Award.
